About Consulate General of Spain in Boston
The Boston office serves Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. Although Connecticut is culturally grouped with New England, Spain’s official district assigns it to the Consulate General in New York. The office serves Spanish citizens registered or resident in its district and visa applicants who can show lawful residence in one of those states; living closer to Boston is not enough to determine where an application belongs.
The current address on the hours-and-contact page is 10 St. James Avenue, fifth floor, Suite 501, Boston, MA 02116, and it matches Google Maps. A Ministry page listing all consular posts still shows 31 St. James Avenue, Suite 905, an older address that could misdirect visitors. We recommend following the dedicated hours-and-contact page, which also lists communication channels and holiday closures, and checking it before travelling.
The office schedules general service from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekdays, always by appointment requested by email. Its official guidance says phone calls are not the way to request appointments and every service—apart from a genuine emergency—requires prior confirmation. There is a tightly limited exception: documents can be collected from 1 to 2 p.m. without an appointment if the visitor presents the relevant receipt. This window is not for enquiries or new files, and the old passport must be presented when collecting a renewed one.
A passport requires Spanish nationality, enrolment in the Consular Register, an in-person appearance, the fee and documents that vary for renewals, first issues and minors. Because demand is high, the office asks people to start renewals at least eight months before expiry and says delivery may take four to six weeks; the site also contains a shorter general estimate, so travellers should not plan around that figure. Schengen visa appointments and intake are handled at BLS Boston; other visa categories may follow different instructions. BLS is an intake centre, not the consular counter or passport appointment system.
Maps reviews include thanks for fast, efficient or professional service alongside accounts of waiting, communication difficulty and appointment searches. They concern different situations and sections, so we do not present them as a uniform measure of the consulate. The most useful distinction for readers is among the three points often confused: which state Boston serves, which address is current and whether the visit is an appointment or document collection.
