Maskay guide

Which Spanish consulate serves New England, and how do Boston passport and visa procedures work?

A guide to Spain’s Boston Consulate: five New England states, appointments by email, document collection and passport and visa applications.

The Consulate General of Spain in Boston serves five states: Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. Although Connecticut is also part of New England, Spain’s Ministry assigns that state to the Consulate General in New York. Jurisdiction depends on residence and on the service requested, so geographic proximity does not replace the official district. For visas, the consulate says applicants must be legally resident within its territory.

The address needs an extra check. The current hours-and-contact page places the office at 10 St. James Avenue, fifth floor, Suite 501, Boston, MA 02116; that matches the exact Google Maps listing. However, the official page listing Spain’s consular network still shows 31 St. James Avenue, Suite 905. For this guide, we rely on the specific contact page, which also updates hours and channels, and recommend checking it again before setting out.

The office takes appointments Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It says every consular service—except genuine emergencies—requires an appointment requested by email at cog.boston@maec.es, not by phone. From 1 to 2 p.m., documents may be collected without an appointment, but only with the relevant receipt; this is not a window for questions, new applications or appointment requests. Anyone collecting a renewed passport must bring the old one. Arriving late or without all required photocopies may mean requesting another appointment.

For passports, the Ministry requires enrolment in the Consular Register, an in-person appearance and the documents specified for the applicant’s circumstances. Boston’s page warns that, because demand is exceptionally high, renewals should be requested at least eight months before expiry; it also mentions a delivery estimate of roughly four to six weeks. Since the same website includes a general three-week estimate, we use the more cautious warning and advise against planning travel around a promised delivery date. Schengen visa applications go through BLS Boston under a separate appointment system; that centre should not be confused with the consulate or passport appointments.

Visible reviews on the Maps listing include accounts praising efficient, professional service as well as reports of delays, difficulty obtaining appointments or receiving replies. Those comments cannot assess every department and do not replace official requirements. The practical guidance we can confirm is to check jurisdiction, use the 10 St. James address and keep the document-collection window separate from a service appointment.

The Spain Consulate in Boston profile brings together the office, hours, services and public review themes.

Bottom line

Before travelling, use the current address on the hours-and-contact page, confirm that your state belongs to Boston and email the appropriate office with a complete file. The no-appointment window from 1 to 2 p.m. is for document collection only, not enquiries or new applications.
