About TEXAS Grant — Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board

TEXAS Grant and TEOG are different state grants, and the first choice depends on the institution. TEXAS Grant serves eligible undergraduate students at Texas public general academic universities; TEOG is for students at participating public community colleges, state colleges and technical institutes. There is no single state application that guarantees a payment: the rules are administered through each campus, using institutional allocations and priority groups. Confusing the names can lead students to use the wrong eligibility rules, limits or calendar.

To start a TEXAS Grant review, a student must be a Texas resident, demonstrate financial need, apply for available aid through FAFSA or TASFA as applicable, meet Selective Service registration rules or an exemption, and attend at least three-quarter time in an eligible bachelor’s program without already holding a bachelor’s degree. The common high-school pathway requires graduation from an accredited Texas school and enrollment at an approved institution within 16 months, subject to an attempted-credit limit. Other routes involve prior TEOG, an associate degree or military service; each has separate timing and conditions, so confirm which pathway you meet.

FAFSA can open federal, state and institutional aid review. If you do not file FAFSA, TASFA may be available to students not eligible for federal aid; THECB advises against completing TASFA after FAFSA and recommends asking the intended college which application fits. For 2026–27, January 15 was a state priority date used by many universities, not a hard closing date; it has passed as of October 12, 2026, but a campus may still review later files under its funding rules. In the FY2027 guide, a $6,478 SAI is a priority threshold for certain initial awards, not a basic eligibility test for every applicant. The 2026–27 maximum is also not a promised amount: TEXAS Grant can reach $5,399 per semester at public universities and health-related institutions, with a recommended target of $2,500. The college may award less based on its allocation and need; priority rules apply to certain groups. Filing early does not guarantee funds. Ask whether other non-loan aid will cover remaining tuition and required fees, and which expenses remain outside the grant.

TEOG follows a different path: it serves undergraduates in the first 45 semester credit hours who attend at least half-time in an eligible associate degree or certificate program. FY2027 semester maximums vary by campus type: $2,134 at community colleges, $1,840 at state colleges and $3,896 at technical institutes. Dallas College students on Reddit asked in 2026 why TEOG disappeared, forms were missing or payments were delayed. Comments do not establish why any individual award changed; use them to ask the college about attempted credits, documents, residency, need review and available funds. Request a written balance explanation and do not count on a refund until it posts.

Compare the full offer and separate grants from loans. Ask the college to confirm the program name, credits counted, calculated need, residency status, missing documents, renewal standards and amount posted to your account. THECB publishes the rules and allocations from Austin, but the college reviews each student and applies the award. If you plan to transfer from a community college to a university, ask whether your record can qualify through the TEOG-to-TEXAS Grant pathway and what transfer deadline applies.
