Texas has two similarly named grants, but students do not choose between them by preference: the college and program of study determine the path. TEXAS Grant serves eligible undergraduate students at public general academic universities; TEOG serves students at participating public community colleges, state colleges and technical institutes. The campus reviews the file and sets the amount within its allocation. Start with the separate profiles for TEXAS Grant and TEOG to compare pathways and conditions.
Initial TEXAS Grant requirements include Texas residency, financial need, FAFSA or TASFA as applicable, at least three-quarter-time enrollment, an eligible bachelor’s program and no prior bachelor’s degree; students qualify through one of several pathways—Texas high school, prior TEOG, an associate degree or military service—with different timing rules. TEOG’s FY2027 guide requires residency and need, at least half-time enrollment in an eligible associate or certificate program, and remaining within the first 45 semester credit hours, with stated exclusions for dual-enrollment and exam credit. Both programs have renewal and academic-progress rules.
FAFSA opens federal, state and college aid consideration. TASFA is a route for students who are not eligible for FAFSA; THECB recommends asking the college first and says not to submit TASFA after FAFSA. Many universities use January 15 as the state priority date, but it is not one universal final deadline. That date has passed for 2026–27, though the 2026–27 TASFA may be submitted until June 30, 2027; the college confirms required documents and remaining funds. Filing after January 15 can lose priority and does not guarantee money. Also note that the FY2027 priority SAI of $6,478 is not a general eligibility requirement.
2026–27 semester maximums help explain the scale, but they are not safe budget assumptions. TEXAS Grant caps at $5,399 per semester at eligible universities and health-related institutions, with $2,500 as the recommended target. TEOG maximums are $2,134 at community colleges, $1,840 at state colleges and $3,896 at technical institutes. A school can award less based on allocation and need. For TEXAS Grant, the guidelines require institutions to use other non-loan funds to cover remaining tuition and required fees under the program rules; that does not automatically pay housing, transportation or living expenses.
If an award is missing or canceled, ask for a written diagnosis. In September 2026, Dallas College students discussed TEOG disappearing from their portal and proposed different explanations; comments do not prove the cause. Ask which grant was reviewed, whether you are classified as a Texas resident for aid, which attempted credits count, whether FAFSA/TASFA arrived, whether verification is missing, how need was calculated, whether campus funds remain and how to appeal. Compare the full balance and confirmed aid before adding classes or accepting a loan. Use the two profiles to find the relevant THECB program and campus contact.
Compare the options and confirm eligibility and deadlines directly with the program before applying.
