About Hampshire Hospitals
Hampshire Hospitals: NHS hospital care in Hampshire
Hampshire Hospitals is a hospital trust within the UK National Health Service (NHS). Its activity is organised around three sites: Andover War Memorial Hospital, Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital and Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester. The organisation serves the communities of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and structures its offer around inpatient care, outpatient clinics, emergency care and specialised services.
Patient care and organisation of services
Information for patients and visitors covers hospital admission, preparing for your stay, care during your stay, outpatient appointments and day surgery. The trust also details practical matters such as accessibility of its facilities, patient privacy and dignity, safety and wellbeing in hospital, and discharge planning. For family, friends and carers there is specific information on visiting, overseas patients and support services.
Patient resources include the health records portal, the Health Information Point (HiP), easy read materials, patient information leaflets and links to local support groups. The organisation also publishes information on how it uses personal data, a child-friendly privacy notice and resources for carers, such as the Stay in Touch messaging service and a walking aid reuse scheme.
Clinical services and units
The trust's directory of departments, services and wards is extensive. It includes Acute Assessment Units (AAU), Acute Frailty Units, Ambulatory Care Units (ACU), Coronary Care Units and Cardiology, Critical Care (ICU and HDU), Emergency Departments, Day Surgery Units and Diagnosis and Treatment Centres (DTC), as well as radiology, radiotherapy and blood tests.
Surgical and inpatient activity covers trauma and orthopaedics, with specific wards for elective orthopaedics and trauma orthopaedics, plus planned major surgery. In the maternal and child health area, services include maternity, neonatal unit, gynaecology and women's health, antenatal and postnatal care, and an Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (EPAU). Rehabilitation services such as the Kingfisher Rehabilitation Unit and stroke and hyper acute stroke units such as Twyford Ward are also listed.
The offer is completed by mental health and addiction services, such as alcohol services, and specialised units such as the Haemophilia Centre, Countess of Brecknock Hospice (COBH) and Rotherwick Foundation Cardiac Unit. The trust maintains an A-Z list of consultants and referral guidance, forms and useful information for primary care professionals.
Hampshire Orthopaedic Centre and ongoing projects
The Hampshire Orthopaedic Centre (HOC) is presented as a centre of excellence for common orthopaedic procedures, including hip and knee replacements. According to published information, adults across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight who need this type of surgery may be eligible to be treated there, with the aim of speeding up access to these procedures.
The trust also provides information on works and incidents at its facilities. At the Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital site, a section of road remained temporarily closed from Monday 7 September to allow excavation and infrastructure improvement works. In Winchester, the construction of a new Urgent Treatment Centre required pedestrian access for those not attending the emergency department to be diverted via the main hospital entrance or Queen's Road, while the emergency department (A&E) continued to operate as normal.
Research, education and strategy
The organisation has a research and development department that publishes studies open to recruitment, information for patient participants, patient research ambassadors and materials explaining what taking part in a study involves. It also maintains its own research strategy and collaborations such as the Hampshire Collaboration for Health Research and Education, alongside quality improvement activities.
In terms of education, the trust offers education and training, and has a Global Health Hub with international projects and former partnership programmes. Its 2026-2031 strategy sets out its direction for the next five years, and the Hampshire Together plan addresses the modernisation of its hospitals and health services. Sustainability is covered in the Climate Action and Green Plan and in a sustainable procurement policy.
Governance, involvement and transparency
The governance structure includes a Board of Directors with information about its members and papers, and a Council of Governors with identifiable governors. The trust publishes its performance, information on equality, diversity and inclusion, freedom of information, the NHS constitution and its stance on violence and aggression. It also details the charities that support its work: Hampshire Hospitals Charity, Winchester Hospice, Ark Cancer Centre Charity, Countess of Brecknock Hospice and Hampshire Medical Fund.
Public involvement is channelled through patient and public involvement, volunteering, membership and surveys. The trust organises events and meetings, including its annual general meeting, and maintains a blog and a news section with clinical insights. In terms of care, it offers interpretation services and support for patients with learning disabilities, and has a Primary Care Liaison Service (PCLS), GP newsletters and telemedicine for care homes.
Access and emergency services
The trust reminds the public that its sites experience periods of high occupancy and recommends considering whether a health problem requires urgent care; if in doubt, it advises calling 111 or checking the service website. Andover War Memorial Hospital has a Minor Injuries Unit for minor injuries, burns and dislocations. In Basingstoke, from 18 March 2026, patients aged 16 or over attending the emergency department can opt out of HIV testing.
