About TT2 Limited

TT2 Limited and the management of the Tyne Tunnels

TT2 Limited is the company that operates the Tyne Tunnels, a toll infrastructure connecting the two banks of the River Tyne in North East England. Its activity focuses on running the payment system, customer service and managing incidents related to traffic through the tunnels.

Tolls and payment methods

The toll applies to each passage, understood as a one-way journey. If a user travels northbound and southbound, they are charged for two passages. The fares published on the site are as follows:

  • Motorbikes: exempt for exemption account holders.
  • Cars, vans or buses under 3.5 tonnes: £2.60.
  • Light goods vehicles (LGV), vans or buses over 3.5 tonnes: £5.20.

The company states that all tolls and charges are exempt from VAT. Users can pay the amount online, via the mobile app, on the automated telephone line or at a PayPoint retailer. Cash and cheques are not accepted directly, although cash can be handed over at a PayPoint outlet. American Express is also not accepted as a card payment method.

Payment must be made before midnight on the day after using the tunnel. Non-payment results in the issue of an Unpaid Toll Charge Notice (UTCN).

Pre-paid accounts and exemptions

TT2 offers a pre-paid account that applies a 10% discount on the toll. It also manages exemption accounts for users who meet the established requirements, with a specific application process. Motorbike exemption account holders are exempt from payment.

Customer service and incident management

The company has a customer experience team that handles queries about accounts, exemption applications, payments and general questions related to the tunnels. Appeals cannot be submitted by phone, although an agent can discuss the case in general terms. There are also specific forms for appeals, complaints, marketing and press enquiries, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and charity, as well as for transport and hazardous or abnormal loads.

Community initiatives

Through the Tyne Tunnels Community Fund, TT2 has supported various local causes. Among the actions listed on its website are the donation of a rescue craft to the RNLI to improve safety on North East beaches, sponsorship of the Tales on the Tyne Trail in support of St Oswald's Hospice with a contribution of £6,250, and support for a school in South Shields to encourage physical activity among pupils.
