Sibstar: debit card and app for safe everyday spending management

Sibstar is a British financial service that combines a debit card with a mobile app. Its purpose is to enable vulnerable people to manage their everyday spending safely, protecting them from fraud, overspending and addiction relapse. The company was founded by Jayne Sibley, who started the project to help her parents, who were affected by dementia, avoid scams and overdrafts.

How it works and spending control

The card can be used by the user themselves or managed by a family member or support person. In the latter case, the vulnerable person has the card while their support person uses the app to monitor and control usage. The system allows daily, monthly and ATM withdrawal limits to be changed instantly and remotely, as well as restricting where the card can be used. In addition, real-time notifications are received every time a payment is made.

Sign-up process

Registration is done through the app, available for iOS and Android. The user selects the appropriate account type, completes their details, provides the required documentation and receives the card by post. Once activated and loaded with funds, it can be used.

The card is issued by AF Payments Limited under licence from Mastercard International. AF Payments Limited is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) of the United Kingdom under the Electronic Money Regulations 2011 for the issuing of electronic money and payment instruments. Sibstar's company number is 12674365.
