Atmosphere and origin of the name

The tearoom is described as a cosy and welcoming space, with friendly staff in uniform and a personal touch, and it is pet-friendly. Its name comes from a local legend: at the end of the eighteenth century, a tunnel was discovered at Richmond Castle that was believed to lead to Easby, where there is a ruined abbey. As the passageway was too narrow, a little drummer boy was lowered in and told to walk along the tunnel, banging his drum while the soldiers followed the sound from outside. The drumbeats were heard as far as Easby Woods, but they stopped before reaching the abbey and the boy was never seen again. The Drummer Boy's Stone, on the path to Easby, marks the spot where they were last heard.
