The building, originally an 18th-century farm, was restored by Marco and Alix Landolt after they acquired it in 2000, and opened as a hotel on 1 July 2003. The estate sits on 12 acres of gardens, with a long tree-lined driveway leading to the property.

Dining: The Dining Room and Grey's

Whatley Manor offers two dining options. The Dining Room is the Michelin-starred restaurant, led by Executive Head Chef Ricki Weston, offering an innovative tasting menu with selected wines. Grey's offers a more relaxed atmosphere, with afternoon tea. The website allows you to book a table at both venues.

The website also details options for the festive season, such as Christmas dinners and events and the New Year's Eve party.

Gardens and surroundings

The 12 acres of grounds have been transformed into 26 distinct gardens, many of them based on the original 1920s plans. The gardening team is led by David Pearce as Head Gardener. The estate also includes a beehive (Whatley Beehives) integrated into the surroundings.

Sustainability and certifications

The hotel presents itself as a sustainable accommodation and has achieved EarthCheck Gold certification. The Sustainability Officer is Florence Yu. The website devotes a section to the property's environmental actions.

History of the property

The building was originally a farm called Twatley Farm, a name derived from "To the wet lea", and was rebuilt in the 18th century. In 1857 the estate was bought by T. G. Smith, who from 1871 was lord of Easton Grey Manor. It later passed to his sister Honora Wilder and her husband, the Reverend George Wilder, who owned it in 1910. Between 1899 and 1924, Rear Admiral Reginald Neeld lived in the house with his family. During the First World War, the Twatley drawing room was used as a packing centre for gaiters, overshoes and Red Cross parcels destined for the front. In 1925 the estate was acquired by H. C. Cox, a Canadian and Deputy Master of the Beaufort Hunt, who modified the interior, added the west wing — now called the Tudor wing —, extended the stable yard and built the coach house, as well as designing ornamental gardens and a small park. Around 1947 it passed to Priscilla Coriat and her second husband, Harold Isaac Coriat, who kept it until 1957. In 1961 the estate was divided by R. J. Rennie and it was then that it received the name Whatley Manor. Marco and Alix Landolt acquired it in 2000 and restored it.
