About Homeprotect
Homeprotect: home insurance for non-standard properties and situations
Homeprotect is a British company specialising in home insurance, targeting homeowners and tenants whose circumstances or properties fall outside the usual criteria of conventional insurers. Founded in 2002, it operates as a trading name of Avantia Insurance Limited, an entity authorised and regulated by the UK's Financial Conduct Authority.
The company states that it can insure more than 95% of UK homes and that the average time to obtain a quote is under ten minutes. Its policies have AXA Insurance as lead underwriter.
Types of insurance and cover
Homeprotect's range is organised into three main types: buildings insurance, buildings and contents insurance, and contents insurance. In addition, the following optional covers can be purchased separately:
- Accidental damage
- Home emergency
- Legal expenses
- Lost keys
The company also offers a home emergency helpline and a legal advice line, both available 24 hours a day.
Properties and situations covered
Homeprotect's specialisation covers a wide range of scenarios that are often excluded by the mainstream market. Among the properties it insures are unoccupied homes, those undergoing renovation, non-standard construction (timber, concrete, etc.), listed buildings, timber-framed homes, high-value homes, converted barns, flat-roofed properties and heritage homes. It also covers homes with lodgers, second homes, holiday homes — including those managed as Airbnb — B&B and guesthouse accommodation.
As for personal circumstances, the company insures homeowners, landlords, live-in landlords, tenants and flatmates. It also considers profiles that other insurers often reject, such as applicants who have previously been refused insurance, have prior claims, criminal convictions or financial problems. It also covers businesses run from home, B&B owners, foster carers, people in high-risk occupations and childminders.
The cover extends to homes in flood-risk areas, with subsidence issues, with underpinning or in high-theft areas. It also insures properties with more than six bedrooms and homes with collections of valuable items.
Awards and ratings
Homeprotect holds a five-star rating from Moneyfacts and an excellent rating on Trustpilot based on more than 20,000 reviews. According to its own survey conducted between 4 November and 2 December 2025 among 1,281 buying customers, 74% of them saved money when switching their insurance to Homeprotect.
