About British Pet Insurance
British Pet Insurance: pet insurance in the United Kingdom
British Pet Insurance is the trading name under which Petcover EU Limited operates, an entity authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under reference number 747757 and registered in England and Wales. The company acts on behalf of the insurer Fortegra Insurance UK Limited. Petcover Group launched this service in 2018 with the aim of developing quality, affordable pet insurance in the UK market.
The entity states it has protected the health of thousands of pets across the United Kingdom, from pygmy hedgehogs to palomino ponies, and offers flexible levels of cover with optional extras adaptable to each animal and budget.
Policies for dogs, cats, horses and exotic animals
The catalogue is organised into four main lines of insurance for individuals:
- Dog insurance: vet fee cover up to £12,000, with optional extras.
- Cat insurance: up to £9,000 in vet fees for cats and kittens, with additional protection options.
- Horse insurance: policies tailored to horse owners and those who loan a pony.
- Exotic pet insurance: up to £5,000 in vet fees, with specific cover for parrots, lizards, snakes, tortoises, small mammals and birds of prey.
Policies are taken out by requesting a quote, with the possibility of retrieving a previous quote or converting a trial policy into a definitive one.
Insurance for pet businesses
Following Petcover Group's acquisition of Brooks Braithwaite, policies for animal-related businesses are now only available through Brooks Braithwaite. This firm covers, in addition to the businesses previously served by British Pet Insurance, boarding kennels, catteries, animal clubs, shows and other similar activities. Pet business policies already taken out with British Pet Insurance remain valid until the date stated on the policy, and the company's team contacts the customer at renewal time to facilitate the transition to Brooks Braithwaite.
Partner programme with professionals
The company runs a partner programme aimed at different profiles in the sector: responsible breeders, animal shelters and charities, veterinary clinics and other pet services such as dog groomers, trainers, carers and walkers. Partners can offer their customers between four and six weeks of free pet insurance.
Customer service and claims handling
The company handles enquiries and manages claims through its UK team, with telephone service available seven days a week until 20:00. The company states it holds the Feefo Platinum Trusted Service award and says its aim is to process claims as smoothly and quickly as possible. Its website also publishes informative articles on topics such as the comparison between accident-only and lifetime dog insurance, the treatment of pre-existing conditions in policies or weight management in horses.
