About Gidleigh Park
Gidleigh Park, a Michelin-starred country house hotel on the edge of Dartmoor
Gidleigh Park is a five-star country house hotel located in Chagford, Devon, on the boundary of Dartmoor National Park. It occupies a Tudor-style house surrounded by 107 acres of gardens and woodland, beside the upper reaches of the River Teign. The property is part of the Andrew Brownsword Hotels collection, owned by Andrew and Christina Brownsword, and its manager is Alex Barrau.
Accommodation: 24 rooms and suites
The hotel has 24 individually designed rooms and suites. Among them is the Haytor suite, configured as a family room sleeping four. Check-in is from 3pm and check-out is at 11am; guests may arrive earlier or stay on after check-out to use the lounges and explore the grounds and the walks onto Dartmoor.
Michelin-starred restaurant
Gidleigh Park's restaurant holds one Michelin star. Its cuisine is inspired by the local landscape, with seasonal ingredients from its own kitchen garden and the surrounding moorland. The service is open to both resident guests and non-residents, for lunch, dinner and afternoon tea, and booking in advance is recommended. Afternoon tea is served daily in the lounges and sitting rooms; the price quoted is £52 per person for the full version and £72 with champagne. Breakfast is included in most rates and is served in the restaurant each morning.
Experiences and activities at the hotel and on Dartmoor
The activities on offer include falconry, wine tasting, guided nature walks, tennis, croquet and a putting green. Most require advance booking. The walks onto Dartmoor start directly from the hotel. The property presents itself as a place to switch off and enjoy the natural surroundings.
Weddings, events and exclusive use
The hotel hosts weddings, private dinners and celebrations, with the option of exclusive use of the house and all 24 rooms. Capacity, packages and available dates are arranged through the events team. Gift vouchers are also available for stays, Michelin-starred dinners and afternoon tea, purchasable online for fixed amounts or as specific experiences.
Policy for guests with pets and children
Dogs are accepted in certain rooms, with a supplement of £20 per dog per night including a bed and water bowl. Dogs cannot access the main house or the restaurant. Assistance dogs are welcome throughout the hotel. Children of all ages are also welcome, with smaller portions of the main menus for younger guests.
Historic setting and access
The history of the property goes back centuries, from the Prouz family in the time of William the Conqueror to the major reconstruction in 1925, when Charles Harold Campbell McIlwraith commissioned the architect Stanley Philpot to redesign the house. It became a hotel in 1955 and was restored and enhanced under the ownership of Andrew and Christina Brownsword, with a full refurbishment in 2005. The nearest station is Exeter St David's, around 45 minutes away by car. It is advisable to follow the signs to Chagford rather than to the village of Gidleigh, as satnavs may direct you to the wrong place. The postcode is TQ13 8HH. There is complimentary parking on site, with no need to book in advance. The building is historic, so accessibility requirements should be discussed directly with the hotel before booking.
