Grobdale of Girthon: farm and rural accommodation in Galloway

Grobdale of Girthon is a small farm located in the Galloway hills, in south-west Scotland. The name combines "Grobdale", meaning dividing valley, and "Girthon", the area where it is situated. The farm covers 65 acres of pasture, hillside, river, wetlands and some woodland.

The Hunter family —Andrew, Sarah and Lauren— moved from Manchester to start a rural life in Dumfries and Galloway. They arrived at the farm in 2017 and, as they tell it, converted three stone buildings into holiday accommodation.

The accommodation offering consists of three single-storey stone cottages, with views over the surrounding hills and valley:

All three cottages have an EPC energy rating of C (74). The holiday let holds short-term let licence number DG00478F, valid until 5 June 2029.

Livestock and farm produce

The farm raises Herdwick sheep, a hardy Lakeland breed, and Tamworth pigs, another tough heritage breed, as well as ducks, hens and guinea fowl. All livestock is outdoor reared and grown slowly to bring the best mature flavour to the meat and eggs.

The farm supplies its produce to local restaurants, as well as to small businesses and homes in the area. Among the complementary activities is a farm shop where you can sample the home-produced meats.

Experiences on the farm

As well as accommodation, Grobdale of Girthon offers a 4x4 safari and an off-grid camping area. The farm presents itself as a base for exploring the Galloway area and as a peaceful place to rest.

The company states its intention to minimise its environmental impact by keeping its food miles small.

The family keeps a blog documenting daily life on the farm since their arrival in 2017, when they were new to both farming and life in Scotland.
