About Fitzbillies Trumpington Street

Fitzbillies occupies three adjoining shopfronts on Trumpington Street, the same road as the Fitzwilliam Museum’s grand frontage. The business dates its beginnings to 1920 and has made the glazed, spiral-shaped Chelsea bun its emblem. Look at the doors before entering: the bakery, table-service tearoom and coffee counter serve different purposes. After the galleries, you can take a bun on your walk or extend the afternoon over a pot of tea.

The original branch serves brunch, lunch and traditional afternoon tea, as well as coffee and takeaway sandwiches. It lists hours of 08:00–18:00 on weekdays and 08:30–18:00 at weekends. Walk-ins are the rule, although booking requests are accepted for groups of six or more. Its website explains which door leads to the table-service tearoom and which to the counter for a brief stop. Dogs are welcome. The address also allows you to continue towards the central colleges without a detour.

Visitors commonly praise the bun, scones and classic atmosphere; they also describe waits at busy times and uneven experiences of service or freshness. Being a local institution does not ensure an empty table when the museum closes. If specialty coffee in a contemporary room is the priority, Hot Numbers is on the same street and offers a different pause.
