Maskay guide

Where can you have coffee or tea after visiting the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge?

Two Trumpington Street stops: Fitzbillies for tea and Chelsea buns, or Hot Numbers for specialty coffee and brunch.

The Fitzwilliam Museum releases visitors onto Trumpington Street, where the city remains in view while you decide where to pause. Admission to the collections is free, although some exhibitions can require a ticket, and the usual schedule is Tuesday to Saturday 10:00–17:00 and Sunday from noon. The museum has its own café, but two addresses on the same street offer a different pace: Fitzbillies Trumpington Street, with a tearoom and Chelsea buns, or Hot Numbers Coffee Trumpington Street, focused on coffee and brunch.

One street, two ways to stop

Fitzbillies dates from 1920 and divides its original branch among a bakery, table-service tearoom and coffee counter. Head to the tearoom for an unhurried afternoon tea, or use another door for a bun to take on the walk. Walk-ins are usual, with booking requests accepted for groups of six or more. It opens until 18:00, leaving time after a mid-afternoon museum exit, though busy periods can bring waits. Guests praise the Chelsea bun and classic character, with occasional reservations about service and freshness.

Hot Numbers is at number 4 and works in another register: specialty coffee roasted by the company, sharing tables, changing displays and a small garden. It opens 07:00–18:00 daily and accepts table bookings. From 12 October 2026 its advertised brunch service runs 08:00–14:00; the café remains open afterwards. Visitors appreciate the drink and atmosphere, but some find the room crowded. This is neither its Gwydir Street branch nor the Shepreth roastery.

Fit the stop into your route

If you still want to explore the colleges, the pause can be brief: both addresses are on Trumpington Street and let you continue towards King's Parade. If the museum took the morning, Hot Numbers’ brunch requires attention to the time; Fitzbillies suits a longer tea. On Monday, when the Fitzwilliam is generally closed, neither café replaces the collection visit. Check the museum programme and the service you want before setting out: the best cup depends on timing as much as taste.

Bottom line

Choose Fitzbillies for tea, history and a Chelsea bun; choose Hot Numbers for specialty coffee and a contemporary setting.
