About Moriarty Law

Moriarty Law: debt recovery and litigation from Surrey

Moriarty Law is a legal practice authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) in the UK, with offices in Surrey. The firm presents itself as specialising in debt recovery services, both in the pre-litigation phase and in litigation and enforcement, working on behalf of corporate clients. Its activity focuses on managing unpaid accounts and assisting debtors so they can meet their obligations in a way that suits their circumstances.

Three-tier recovery process

Moriarty Law describes its recovery method as a unique three-tier process covering Data Cleansing and Scoring, Pre Legal Collections and Litigation. The firm uses advanced analytics to identify accounts suitable for the litigation process. Its stated aim is to achieve an amicable resolution, minimising litigation action as much as possible.

Services for clients and debtors

The firm serves both its corporate clients and their customers, that is, the debtors. For debtors, it offers tools and resources to manage their debt, including an affordability calculator that estimates the payment amounts and durations required to clear the balances owed. Once the debtor is ready to start a repayment plan, they can begin the set-up process through the web portal.

Available payment options include:

  • Continuous Payment Authority by debit or credit card, which can be set up on the web portal or by phone.
  • Direct Debit, which can be completed by post or set up by phone.
  • Bank transfer or standing order, using the sort code and account number provided.
  • Payment by debit or credit card through the web portal, by phone or via the automated payment line available 24/7.
  • Cheque or postal order, made payable to Moriarty Law Limited and sent to the firm's address.

The firm accepts Visa Debit, Visa Credit, Visa Electron, Maestro and MasterCard, and states that it is fully PCI DSS Level 1 compliant in the processing of card data.

Customer portal and account management

Moriarty Law provides debtors with a customer dashboard where they can check the status of accounts: the litigation stage they are at, the amount owed, payments made to date, the status of the arrangement (including latest payment amounts and dates, upcoming instalments and any arrears), as well as a summary of the arrangement and the hold status. The portal also allows users to set up a payment arrangement online, select the payment method and frequency, request confirmation of the arrangement, receive payment reminders by email or SMS and obtain receipts when charges are made to the debit card. In addition, users can request a statement of account or a paid in full receipt once the account is cleared, which is sent within 30 minutes as a PDF attachment on Moriarty Law letterhead to the registered email address. It is also possible to update contact details (address, email addresses and phone numbers) from the portal, although at certain litigation stages updating the address requires contacting the offices.

Customer service and contact channels

The firm has a team of highly trained litigation executives who handle phone calls to provide account information, explain the process and understand the debtor's financial and personal circumstances, in order to seek an amicable resolution with the client. In some cases, a reduced settlement amount may be available. It also offers a web chat service with live agents, with no bots or automated responses, where conversations are saved and documents can be attached via a paperclip icon. If a message is sent outside office hours, a response is received by email. For enquiries by email or letter, a team of legal administrators responds to communications, although due to volume it may take up to 7 days to deal with an email; the firm recommends calling by phone if the matter is urgent or if the account is subject to litigation. Clients can also request a call-back through the contact form, with the warning that this will only be made within office hours.

Electronic communications and security

Moriarty Law has been replacing letters to its clients' customers with digital communications via email and SMS. These messages include a unique link to view the letters electronically on a computer, smartphone or tablet. When clicked, data protection security questions are asked to verify that the recipient is the correct one; once answered, the document can be viewed or saved and the offices contacted or self-service via the online customer web portal. Emails come from a specific address and SMS from 'Moriarty Law'.

Litigation and debt resolution

The firm explains that, in most situations, the first part of the litigation process consists of issuing proceedings in the County Court. Moriarty Law presents itself as a firm that uses sophisticated analytics to identify accounts suitable for litigation and that strives to be one of the leading firms in the market for pre-litigation, legal and enforcement recovery services. Its approach seeks an amicable resolution and the fewest possible legal actions, working with all parties to resolve the matter.
