About Moor Hall Restaurant with Rooms

Moor Hall, three Michelin stars in the Lancashire countryside

Moor Hall is a restaurant with rooms located in Aughton, in West Lancashire (England), in a group of buildings clustered around a lake and surrounded by five acres of gardens. The establishment holds three Michelin stars, a Michelin Green Star and five AA Rosettes, and is one of ten restaurants in the United Kingdom to hold three stars. Its chef patron, Mark Birchall, born in Lancashire, creates menus defined by the establishment itself as delicate and produce-led.

Origin-driven cuisine and local produce

The culinary offering is built around the concept of origin and provenance of ingredients. The restaurant grows fruit, vegetables, flowers and herbs in its own gardens and supplements what it does not produce with the work of local farmers and artisans. Charcuterie, bread and products from its own micro-dairy are also made on site. The menu is inspired by the surroundings and by fresh seasonal produce.

The Barn, the sister offering

Alongside Moor Hall is The Barn, described as its Michelin-starred sister restaurant. It offers a simpler menu, but with the same focus on attention to detail. The Barn also has a terrace, whose opening was announced on the site analysed.

Accommodation

The establishment has rooms distributed between the historic Main House, the Gatehouse and a group of garden rooms. In the MICHELIN Guide hotel selection, Moor Hall retained Two MICHELIN Keys in the 2026 selection.

Awards and chef activity

The site record notes a recent track record of distinctions and appearances. In the MICHELIN Guide 2026, Moor Hall retained its three stars and The Barn retained one. Moor Hall was voted number 1 in the UK in the annual Harden's Top 100 Best UK Restaurants diners' poll (December 2025) and appears in the Squaremeal Top 100 alongside The Barn. At the National Restaurant Awards 2026, the establishment was named No. 5 in the UK, although a headline on the site itself placed it at No. 2. Mark Birchall takes part as Honorary Judge for Kitchen in the final of the Master of Culinary Arts (MCA), organised by the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts and held every four years, and is part of the Roux Scholarship 2026 panel and the National Chef of the Year judging panel. The site also announced a special Burns Night dinner at Atelier Hearth.

History of the building

Moor Hall is a Grade II listed building, described as one of historic Lancashire's best-kept secrets, in a secluded location but close to the former market town of Ormskirk. The site publishes a timeline that starts in 1282 and runs to 2026.
