About Alfocan S.A.

Wild freshwater crayfish

Alfocan S.A. harvests, processes, and wholesales wild freshwater crayfish, primarily Procambarus clarkii. The company describes itself as Spain’s leading producer and exporter and a European leader in the sector. Its products are sold fresh and frozen and include whole crayfish, tails, specialty items, and crayfish flour.

Origins and sustainability

The crayfish are harvested using traditional methods in lakes and rice fields in southern Spain. Alfocan has held ISO 14001 certification since 1999 and participates in a fishery-improvement project with the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership. The company says its products are all-natural, with no additives or preservatives.

Production and certifications

The production center in Isla Mayor, Andalusia, has annual capacity exceeding 2,000 metric tons and uses modern processing lines. Alfocan traces its products from harvest grounds through distribution. It received IFS version 6 (Higher Level) certification in 2008 and BRC issue 7 (Grade A) certification in 2009.

Markets and international presence

The company exports most of its production to Europe, including France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, as well as to the United States. In addition to its Spanish facility, it processes products at company-owned plants in Egypt.
