About Consular Section, Embassy of Japan in Spain
The Embassy’s Madrid Consular Section handles passports, certificates, registrations, overseas voting and visas, but its district excludes Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, the Canaries and Valencia. Barcelona and Las Palmas cover those areas.
For visas, in-person applications use appointments; ordinary collection of a passport with visa is an afternoon walk-in service. Working Holiday notices follow their own dates and requirements.
The office is at Calle Serrano 109. The counter has two weekday service windows and access information points to Gregorio Marañón and República Argentina metro stations.
The official site identifies Hiroshi Yamauchi as Japan’s Ambassador to Spain; its contact page does not name an individual consular-section chief. Check closure dates and the specific procedure before travelling.
Services listed by the office
- Japanese passports, certificates, family-register and nationality procedures, overseas residence registration and overseas voting for Madrid’s jurisdiction.
- Japanese visas for residents in communities assigned to the Embassy; eligibility depends on nationality, purpose and documents, and the procedure specifies when an in-person appointment is required.
- Working Holiday for Spanish citizens: the 2026 quota is closed, and the current notice sets 1 December 2026 as the opening date for 2027 applications.
- Consular, safety and travel guidance; Barcelona handles Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Community, while Las Palmas handles the Canary Islands.
