About Casa de la Miel
Beekeeping services in Tenerife
Casa de la Miel is a beekeeping services center established by Tenerife Island Council and overseen by its Agricultural Product Quality and Value Service. It began operating on February 10, 1996, and is located in El Sauzal in a building within the council-owned Finca La Baranda complex.
The center supports the island’s beekeeping industry through technical services, training, and promotion, with the goal of safeguarding the origin and quality of Tenerife honey.
Services
Services are governed by internal operating rules approved by the full Tenerife Island Council and are available to legally established beekeepers at rates set by the institution. They fall into four categories:
- Honey processing: bottling, labeling, blending, homogenizing, and conditioning crystallized honey.
- Rolling and embossing beeswax.
- Quality-control laboratory: physicochemical, melissopalynological, and sensory analysis.
- Technical advice, training, and promotion of beekeeping, including an apiary health office.
Training
Each year, the center organizes courses and training activities on beekeeping and honey, as well as extra virgin olive oil. A training program is planned for 2026.
Tenerife honey
The European Commission approved the Tenerife Honey Designation of Origin on January 13, 2014. The website provides information on monofloral and multifloral honeys, producers, traceability, and a related mobile app.
Visitor information and events
The center has a visitor center and publishes news and calls for entries, including the Casa de la Miel Regional Honey Contest and a school drawing contest. It is on Instagram and Facebook.
