About Pescados Marcelino
Mussels from the Rías Baixas
Pescados Marcelino, S.L. is a family-owned company with more than 40 years of experience farming, sorting, cooking, and packaging mussels. It operates from Aldán, in Cangas, Pontevedra, near the Ría de Aldán, and its products are associated with mussels from the Galician rías.
Products
The mussels are sold in several formats:
- Live mussels
- Cooked, quick-frozen mussels
- Cooked mussels packed in refrigerated brine
Packaged products in its catalog include 570-g mussel meat in brine (300 g drained weight), 870-g mussel meat in brine, and 1.2-kg half-shell mussels.
Farming and Production
The company operates technologically equipped boats and floating rafts and farms around 2,000 metric tons of mussels. The process begins with collecting seed mussels along the coast. They are attached to ropes suspended from rafts for about a year and a half, until they reach market size. During that period, the ropes are split and the mussels are sorted by size.
At the processing plant, the company uses a large-scale process modeled on home cooking. It says its farming and processing are environmentally friendly because mussels feed on phytoplankton and the process uses no polluting methods or chemical agents.
