A Local Food Cooperative in Gràcia

La Fresca is a self-managed consumer cooperative in Barcelona's Gràcia neighborhood. Members order directly from local agroecological producers, without intermediaries. The cooperative is based at Ateneu Rosa de Foc, a self-managed community center in the same neighborhood.

Products and Ordering

La Fresca organizes monthly orders for different products and offers a weekly 5-kilogram vegetable basket with seven varieties. The “fixed basket” model asks members to buy a basket each week from the farmer, providing the producer with steady demand and a fair price. A smaller weekly fruit basket is also under consideration.

Products include:

• Seasonal vegetables in a weekly basket (5 kilograms, seven varieties)
• Fruit (a weekly basket is being considered)
• Organic pork from Llavora, available by monthly order
• Milk-fed lamb from Serradet de Barneres, available by annual order: a whole lamb of about 8 kilograms at €16 per kilogram (about €128), or half at about 4 kilograms and €16 per kilogram (about €64)
• Fresh fish from La Platjeta, a Barceloneta fishing family, by monthly order, with large seafood boxes, smaller boxes, and an option for a cleaned large box

Producers and Cooperative Decisions

La Fresca works directly with local organic producers and considers new proposals through a participatory process. Members bring proposals to the monthly assembly, where they decide by consensus whether to contact the producer, learn about the project, and try the product. The cooperative is featured in Cooperativisme i agroecologia a Barcelona, published by Comanegra, a book documenting more than 45 agroecological consumer groups in the city.
