Pinyol Vermell

A member-run food cooperative in Gràcia

Pinyol Vermell is a self-managed agroecological food cooperative based in Barcelona's Vila de Gràcia neighborhood. It is part of the independent community center Ateneu La Torna at 18 Carrer de Goya. The cooperative brings together about 30 family households. Its name is a Mallorcan expression meaning “excellent” or “of especially high quality.”

Activities and history

The cooperative focuses on agroecological food and works with suppliers and producers. It also runs its own space, La Taverneta del Pinyol. In November 2018, it marked its 10th anniversary with a discussion and a community dinner. Earlier, in June 2016, it joined celebrations for La Torna's 20th anniversary.

Public issues and the neighborhood

The cooperative has spoken out about local issues, including the renovation of Mercat de l'Abaceria. In July 2016, it joined the platform “Gràcia cap a on vas?” for a discussion about the market's future. At the time, a city proposal called for a supermarket, parking, and offices, with an estimated budget of €24 million.
