A member-run food cooperative in El Farró

Germinal is an agroecological food consumer cooperative in Barcelona's El Farró neighborhood. It has operated since 2005 and brings together people who buy this kind of food. Customers do not have to join to order a seasonal surprise basket of fresh, recently harvested fruits and vegetables.

How it works

The cooperative is self-managed, without a hierarchy, and makes decisions in member assemblies. Committees organize the work. Members can sign in to access a private online area.

Products and local suppliers

Germinal buys directly from nearby producers, avoiding intermediaries and prioritizing organic, seasonal, and fair-trade products. Regular suppliers include:

• La Veganeria: a bakery and shop in Montseny that has made plant-based protein products, including tofu and veggie burgers, for more than 20 years.
• Cal Rosset: farms in Sant Vicenç dels Horts and Germinal's main fruit and vegetable supplier since 2005; the grower is also an active cooperative member.
• Bolet Ben Fet: a farm near Montseny supplying oyster mushrooms, maitake, shiitake, and button mushrooms.
• La Platjeta: fresh seafood from Barceloneta, caught using traditional sustainable fishing methods.
• NaturaBio Cosmetics: a personal care supplier whose products include black toothpaste.
• Fundació: a supplier of fresh pasta, fresh pizza, sauces, vegan spreads, prepared foods, and preserves.
