In Wichita, “college” can mean a transfer-focused university, a public community college or hands-on technical training. WSU Tech is the city’s public technical college, formally the Wichita State University Campus of Applied Sciences and Technology. It affiliated with Wichita State University in 2018, but remains a separate institution with its own application, tuition and program requirements. Its history begins in 1965 as a technical-training school; state authorization in 1995 gave it college-credit and associate-degree authority.
That applied focus shapes the choices. WSU Tech advertises more than 75 programs across aviation, healthcare, manufacturing, skilled trades, transportation, business, law enforcement, design, information technology, culinary arts and general education. An Associate of Applied Science normally requires at least 60 credits and is typically planned as a two-year program; technical certificates are often around one year, while certificates of completion can take less than a semester. These are planning guides, not promises: prerequisites, schedules, clinical or lab hours and course load affect the actual finish date.
Admission begins with a free online application. WSU Tech’s published open-admission policy accepts applicants who apply and certify a high-school diploma or GED, but individual programs can require prerequisites, placement tests, documents or selective review. The college recommends meeting an advisor to choose a pathway and identify assessments. Accuplacer may be used for reading, writing and math placement, and many programs have entrance requirements of their own. For 2026–27, the published general-education rate is $139 per credit hour. WSU Tech’s tuition table lists program rates from $139 to $391 per credit, depending on training and equipment needs; international students pay an additional 30 percent of the in-state rate. At 15 general-education credits, base tuition would be $2,085 before fees, books or other costs. That is an example, not an average bill: aviation, culinary, nursing, labs and equipment carry different rates and expenses. Use the current tuition-by-program table before budgeting.
Financial help may come from several places. Completing FAFSA is the gateway to federal Pell Grant eligibility and other aid; WSU Tech’s school code is 005498. The WSU Tech Foundation offers scholarships in varying amounts across programs, alongside program-specific awards and Kansas opportunities such as Kansas Promise. WSU Tech also lists Wichita Promise for qualifying local workforce programs. Each award has its own deadlines and enrollment or residency rules, so compare the conditions on the official scholarship page and financial-aid page rather than assuming an award covers every expense.
Students who need English have a separate starting point to investigate. WSU Tech’s adult-education page lists ESL classes through NexStep Alliance at 3351 N. Webb Road, not at one of the four campuses. Its published schedule is Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9 a.m.–noon or 6–9 p.m.; call 316-677-1150 to check placement, dates and availability. WSU Tech also says students entering credit courses must meet its English-proficiency requirements. Ask an advisor how ESL connects to the intended certificate or degree before building a schedule.
Four Wichita sites serve different purposes: NCAT centers aviation and manufacturing; WSU Tech South serves health, business, IT, general education and design; City Center concentrates transportation, construction and industrial automation; and NICHE connects culinary education with kitchens and service work. WSU West is in Maize, outside Wichita; the FutureReady and partner sites have narrower purposes, so the four city campuses are kept distinct here.
Getting to class depends on that campus choice. Wichita Transit’s route map and destination directory list connections near NCAT, South and City Center, but frequency and operating days vary; consult the current schedule before leaving. WSU Tech’s facilities rules direct drivers to marked parking spaces and posted signs. The campuses page links driving directions, but office hours and parking arrangements differ by location. A practical sequence is to choose a credential, verify its location and prerequisites, submit the free application, complete FAFSA and scholarship applications, then ask an advisor about placement, timing and program-specific costs.
