Which Takayama Morning Market Should You Choose: Miyagawa by the River or Jinya-mae by the Old Government House?

Compare riverside Miyagawa with the compact farmers’ market at Jinya-mae, set before Takayama’s former government house, with seasonal hours and a walk linking both.

Takayama wakes before its mid-morning trains arrive. At that hour, stalls appear beside the water and in front of the old government house, offering fruit, vegetables, pickles, flowers and small Hida-made goods. Miyagawa and Jinya-mae share farming roots, yet they do not create the same scene: the first stretches along the river and meets the old town; the second is smaller and sits a few steps from Takayama Jinya and the merchant streets.

Miyagawa occupies the eastern bank of the river between Kajibashi and Yayoi-bashi bridges. In season, the official town guide describes a roughly 350-metre route with many stalls; Japanese sweets and crafts are also sold along the opposite side of the walk. Gifu Prefecture lists hours of 7:00 to noon from April to November and 8:00 to noon from December to March, although some sellers finish earlier when stock runs out. Visitors often praise the riverside setting and the chance to try fruit or pickles; others expected more stalls or a less tourist-oriented experience, especially on cold or rainy mornings.

Jinya-mae places the market in a different setting: its awnings stand before Takayama Jinya, a historic administrative complex with rooms and storehouses from the Edo period. Gifu Prefecture lists 6:00–12:00 from April to December and 7:00–12:00 from January to March. The Hida guide publishes a slightly different seasonal calendar, so check local notices on the day and do not arrive near closing time. Reviews value the contact with growers and the quieter atmosphere, while warning that the number of stalls can be modest and weather-dependent. It is a short stop, not a market that fills several hours.

If you can visit only one, Miyagawa offers the longer walk and open river views; Jinya-mae works better for combining a market, Takayama Jinya and the old town within a few streets. With more time, both fit into one morning: start early at Miyagawa, cross to Jinya-mae, then continue along Sanmachi Suji as shops open. Takayama Station is about a 10–15-minute walk away, depending on the market. Carry cash for small purchases, ask before photographing stallholders, and remember that this is a working local market: its appeal depends on the people who keep it going, not just the postcard view.

Bottom line

Choose Miyagawa for a longer riverside stroll and Jinya-mae to pair stalls with the historic government house and old town. Arrive early if you want to see both.
