About Jinya-mae Morning Market

In front of Takayama Jinya—the former government building that now operates as a history museum—Jinya-mae Morning Market occupies a compact row of stalls. Its origins go back more than three centuries, when farmers came to sell their produce; today visitors may find fruit, vegetables, pickles, miso, mochi and other local foods. It is smaller in scale than Miyagawa, but its setting lets travellers move from the market to Hida’s administrative history in a few steps.

Gifu’s official tourism listing says the market opens daily year-round: 6:00 to noon from April through December and 7:00 to noon from January through March. Hida’s tourism page gives different seasonal hours, so check local information before setting out early. Reviews value the proximity to Takayama Jinya, the quiet scale and local growers’ goods; others find only a few stalls or limited variety. It is best understood as a short stop that depends on season and weather, not as a covered food market with a guaranteed selection.

The walk from Takayama Station takes about 15 minutes, and the market sits directly outside Jinya’s entrance. You can browse first and then tour the historic building when it opens, or make the market a pause during a walk through Sanmachi Suji. If you have time for only one market, Miyagawa offers a longer riverside stroll; Jinya-mae suits visitors prioritising the former government house and a quick stop. Stall numbers are not guaranteed: arrive in the morning, check the museum’s hours separately and keep an alternative plan if rain reduces activity.
