Maskay guide

Where can you taste Niigata sake: at a historic brewery or at the station?

Imayo Tsukasa explains sake-making in an operating brewery; Ponshukan brings labels from across the prefecture beside the trains. Compare bookings, hours and rules.

Niigata offers two very different ways to understand its sake. About a 15-minute walk from the station, Imayo Tsukasa opens a window onto a brewery founded in 1767; inside the rail complex, Ponshukan brings together labels from producers across the prefecture in a tasting room. One visit revolves around an explanation and the place where sake is made; the other lets travellers compare small pours before boarding a train. They are not interchangeable options but suit different travel rhythms. Imayo Tsukasa requires a reservation and offers tours of about 30 minutes. The Japanese-language tour costs ¥200 per adult; the English-guided tour, available at 2 pm Monday to Friday, costs ¥550. Both pause from 31 December to 3 January. The shop is open from 9 am to 5 pm. Visitors often praise the clear explanations and the feel of an operating brewery; travellers wanting more English-tour times may find the schedule limited. Tastings are available afterwards, but ask about the conditions when booking and do not drive after drinking. Ponshukan is beside the platforms in CoCoLo Niigata Mets. The official ¥1,000 set provides a cup and five coins for up to five pours; some labels use more coins. The tasting room is open from 9:30 am to 8:30 pm, with last admission at 8:15 pm. Public reviews value the selection, self-service format and regional shop, while also mentioning queues and noise at busy times. The key family rule is straightforward: the tasting room does not admit anyone under 20 or parties accompanied by children, although other parts of the shopping complex offer products for all ages. Book the brewery if you want to understand the craft and its context; choose Ponshukan for a short stop or shopping break. The station makes it easier to sample several labels without travelling elsewhere, but it does not show the fermentation process. The marketplace, tasting room and other outlets under the same brand have different hours, so check the exact section. As both experiences involve alcohol, plan your return transport and consider the ages of everyone in your group.
