Maskay guide

What can you do on a rainy day near Aomori Station?

One minute from the station, WA RASSE tells the story of Nebuta; ASPAM adds an observation deck, panoramic cinema and Aomori produce.

Rain does not mean leaving the area around Aomori Station. A short walk links two indoor visits that introduce the prefecture’s culture and scenery: WA RASSE preserves floats from the Nebuta Festival, while ASPAM—the Aomori tourism and local-products centre—brings together an observation deck, panoramic cinema, shops and places to eat. They serve different purposes: one focuses on the summer festival; the other offers a broad view of the city and a showcase of regional products under one roof. WA RASSE is one minute from JR Aomori Station. Its original illuminated floats, several metres high, let visitors examine the paper, paint and structures that parade each August with drums, flutes and haneto dancers. Displays trace Nebuta’s history, with demonstrations and hands-on activities at selected times. Adult admission is ¥620. Visitors often praise the floats’ scale and colour; some expected more live performances, so check the activity schedule if that is central to your visit. About an eight-minute walk from the station, ASPAM is easy to recognise by its triangular profile, designed as a large “A” for Aomori. The 13th-floor deck stands 51 metres above ground and offers a 360-degree panorama of the city, port, Mutsu Bay and the Hakkōda Mountains; on clear days, Hokkaido may be visible. The centre also has a 360-degree digital cinema, shops selling food and crafts, a tourist information desk and restaurants. The observation deck costs ¥500 for adults and the cinema ¥700; a combined ticket costs ¥900. Reviews value the views, films and apple products, although the experience depends on the weather: a clear day reveals much more of the horizon. For a brief stop, visit WA RASSE first and then walk to ASPAM, where you can choose the observation deck, film or shops; the retail floors do not require an admission ticket. The published May–October 2026 schedule sets the observation deck at 9 am–7 pm, but shops and indoor facilities keep different hours. The 360-degree cinema is scheduled to close for maintenance from 27 to 31 October. Confirm the arrangements for your date. JR Aomori Station is one minute from WA RASSE and about eight minutes from ASPAM; the route between them is outdoors, so bring an umbrella on a rainy day.

Bottom line

Start at WA RASSE to see the floats, then continue to ASPAM for panoramic views, an immersive film and regional products. The museum and observation deck have separate admission, and individual floors may keep different hours.
