What to Do on a Rainy Day in Yokohama: The Noodle Museum or the Art Museum?

Two indoor museums turn a rainy day into a route through instant-ramen history, design and modern art in Minato Mirai.

When rain settles over the Minato Mirai waterfront, Yokohama offers two indoor stops with very different rhythms. The CUPNOODLES MUSEUM tells how a household idea changed modern food and invites visitors to design a cup of their own; the Yokohama Museum of Art occupies a Kenzo Tange building and presents collections and exhibitions spanning Japanese and international art. Both can fit into one day, but there is no need to rush. One in the morning and the other after lunch leaves time for the galleries between showers. At the noodle museum, first check whether a slot remains for My CUPNOODLES Factory or the Chicken Ramen workshop. General admission is ¥500, while activities cost extra and can sell out. It is open 10:00 am–6:00 pm and normally closes on Tuesdays. The art museum is also open 10:00 am–6:00 pm and normally closes on Thursdays; part of its Grand Gallery and Jiyu Area is free, while ticketed exhibitions vary in price. Choose the order according to your interests: a family activity and popular culture first, or modern art for a quieter morning. The museums are about a twenty-minute walk apart through Minato Mirai’s broad streets. In heavy rain, the Minatomirai Line can shorten the outdoor transfer and places both venues near stations, though the final stretch still involves walking. Check closure days and exhibition calendars before leaving: Tuesday and Thursday are different, and a booked noodle-museum activity may set the timing for the whole day. Leave room for lunch at Noodles Bazaar or a nearby café, and do not assume tastings are included in admission. A balanced day might begin mid-morning at the CUPNOODLES MUSEUM, continue with a light lunch and finish with an exhibition or the art museum’s free spaces. If travelling with children, book an activity and check age requirements; if keeping costs down, the Jiyu Area helps make the art museum a low-cost stop. Rain does not have to dictate the itinerary: it can sharpen a day around Yokohama’s mix of industry, creativity and visual culture.

Bottom line

Choose the route that fits your day: book a CUPNOODLES MUSEUM activity when travelling with family, or use the art museum’s free Jiyu Area for a flexible visit. Check closures and activity slots first.
