Maskay guide

How should you see the Naruto Whirlpools: by boat or from the bridge walkway?

A practical guide to comparing routes and places in Japan, with useful details for planning a visit.

The Naruto Whirlpools are not an attraction that appears on a fixed schedule: they form as tides pass through the strait between Shikoku and Awaji, changing with each cycle. Visitors can approach them in two complementary ways: walk beneath Ōnaruto Bridge along Uzu-no-Michi or board a high-speed sightseeing boat that moves closer to the current.

The walkway runs about 450 metres beneath the bridge, 45 metres above the sea, with glass floor windows. From there, visitors can watch the full pattern of the water while staying indoors, a benefit for families and anyone who would rather not board a vessel. General admission is ¥510 for adults; opening hours vary by season, and access should be timed with the tide table.

UZUSHIO KISEN departs from Kameura, behind the Otsuka Museum of Art. Its small boat offers a close, moving perspective, but passengers feel the swell and the ride is shorter than a full visit to the walkway. The company publishes fares, and the city’s tourism guide lists the final departure at 4:30 pm. For either option, timing the visit around the stronger tide matters more than choosing a viewpoint for its reputation.

With enough time, combine them: check the tide calendar first, visit Uzu-no-Michi during a recommended window, then walk or take a bus to the pier. Naruto Koen serves the walkway and Kameura-guchi the boat; they are different boarding points. Check return transport and sea conditions. If choosing only one, the bridge offers a calm view; the boat brings the experience closer to the strait’s movement.
