Virginia CTG: grant for transferring from community college to a university

The Two-Year College Transfer Grant supports associate-degree graduates transferring to participating universities; it may reach $3,000 a year depending on need and major.

Virginia CTG encourages students to complete an associate degree at a public two-year college and then transfer to a participating four-year institution. It is transition aid: eligibility is assessed after the degree and when the student begins a bachelor’s program, not general funding for any transfer.

The 2026–27 application lists Virginia residency/in-state status, first enrollment at a four-year college, an associate degree from a Virginia public two-year college with at least a 3.0 GPA, calculated need with an SAI of $15,000 or less, and transfer by the term after earning the degree. FAFSA/VASA must meet campus deadlines; bonus awards require eligible majors.

The base component is $1,000 a year; eligible STEM-N, education, or other fields may add a $1,000 bonus, and some participating campuses may add another, for a published cap up to $3,000 annually. It may renew for junior/senior years under program rules; funds are limited and the maximum is not automatic.

Send the CTG application, final transcript showing degree and GPA, and FAFSA/VASA to the financial-aid office at each university where you apply. Participating schools and bonus majors can change; confirm both before relying on the grant. Ask for a transfer-credit evaluation because CTG does not guarantee credit equivalency or cover the full gap.

Before accepting an aid package, compare your individual notice with the bill and ask what happens if you change enrollment, major, or campus. Read the program profile and consult the administering agency; your institution’s financial-aid office confirms your individual determination.

Information checked on October 12, 2026 against official sources. Deadlines for the 2026–27 cycle have passed for several programs; they are identified as past dates where relevant. Eligibility does not guarantee funding: confirm the academic year, your file, and net cost with the program and your campus financial-aid office.

Bottom line

Plan the transfer with both schools: the community college certifies the associate degree/GPA, and the receiving university checks need, major, and funding.
