Army ROTC Scholarship: college funding and the military service commitment

The national scholarship may cover full tuition and stipends; it requires competitive selection, a participating school, and commissioning as an officer.

Army ROTC lets students earn a college degree while completing military leadership training and commissioning as second lieutenants. The national scholarship is open to high-school applicants and may cover tuition, a monthly allowance, and book assistance. Students may also join ROTC without an initial scholarship, but accepting funds can trigger service obligations.

The national application is competitive and typically begins after junior year of high school. Applicants must meet academic, medical, and physical standards, enter Army ROTC, and gain admission to a participating college. GPA, testing, interviews, immigration status, and priority majors may vary by cohort; the campus unit confirms acceptable academic plans.

GoArmy describes tuition coverage up to the full cost under the selected option, a published $420 monthly allowance, and $1,200 per year for books. A four-year scholarship generally requires four years of active commissioned service plus an additional Reserve/IRR obligation; the exact path depends on component and contract. Ask an advisor what happens if you do not commission.

Check the current cohort timeline and create an account in the scholarship portal after junior year. List several ROTC campuses, apply for college separately, and prepare for medical and physical review. Before signing, request the contract and compare four-year scholarships, tuition/room-and-board options, and active or Reserve obligations.

This is a military-career scholarship, not an unrestricted college award. Service obligations and possible repayment belong in the cost comparison. Read the program profile and the administering agency; ask your financial-aid office to review your individual case.
