How to Study at UDC Community College: Admission, Tuition, English and Three Locations

Admission requirements, published costs, aid, English classes, and programs at Lamond-Riggs, Van Ness and UDC-CC’s aviation hangar.

The University of the District of Columbia Community College (UDC-CC) offers associate degrees and career certificates within Washington’s only public university, but its classes are not confined to one address. Lamond-Riggs is the home campus for most community-college programs; Van Ness houses Mortuary Science and in-person continuing education; aviation maintenance is taught in a hangar at Reagan National Airport. Knowing which site belongs to a program can save a prospective student a wasted trip and help clarify where labs, advising and classes will actually take place.

UDC-CC’s current program directory spans associate degrees in education, graphic design, liberal studies and music; applied programs such as architectural engineering technology, aviation maintenance, accounting technology, law enforcement, legal assisting, mortuary science, nursing and respiratory therapy; and pathways in information technology, computer science, engineering science, business, hospitality, paramedicine and public health. The directory flags some programs as not accepting new students, so use the live program page rather than an old brochure to choose a major. The nursing degree, for example, totals 70 credits and is designed to take four semesters once a student enters the nursing sequence. Prerequisite science and general-education courses come first, and admission to nursing is competitive rather than automatic with general college admission.

Applying and preparing for college-level classes

First-time applicants start through UDC’s Community College admissions page and submit high-school or GED records. UDC says students admitted to UDC-CC take the Accuplacer placement test in English and mathematics, then work with an advisor on first courses and registration. Transfer and returning students should have prior college records reviewed before assuming all credits will apply to a new degree. The university also publishes separate application windows for specialized programs, including aviation and nursing, and these can close earlier than general admission. Start the Community College application process here, then check the intended program’s requirements and calendar.

Tuition, residency and aid

UDC’s Community College fee page still labels its posted schedule “Summer 2025.” That table lists tuition per credit at $117 for District residents, $197 for Metro-area residents and $332 for nonresidents, plus a $430 term fee. At 12 credits, the published totals are $1,834, $2,794 and $4,414, respectively, before course-specific costs. Because UDC has not labeled that Community College table for the 2026–27 academic year, treat these as the last posted figures and confirm the rate with Student Accounts before budgeting. The university defines its Metro category to include residents of Prince George’s and Montgomery counties in Maryland and Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax in Virginia; most applicants must document at least 90 days of qualifying residency before the term. Federal aid begins with the FAFSA, using UDC code 007015, and the university directs students to its scholarship-matching platform and financial-aid office. Review the Community College fee schedule and current residency rules before accepting an award or registering.

English support and noncredit options

UDC’s Continuing and Professional Education program lists in-person English as a Second Language classes at Van Ness. ESL 100 is described for learners at a low-beginning level and covers listening, speaking, reading, writing, comprehension and digital literacy. It is a continuing-education course, not an automatic substitute for college placement or a guaranteed bridge into a degree. New Community College students still complete Accuplacer and program prerequisites; an advisor can help distinguish a language class from credit-bearing English coursework. This is a practical route for someone who needs to build confidence before a full schedule, but students should ask whether the current class is enrolling and how its level fits their next academic step.

Three locations, three different roles

Lamond-Riggs Campus, at 5171 South Dakota Avenue NE, is the first stop for most UDC-CC associate degrees and certificates. It is near Fort Totten Metro and hosts the Bertie Backus Building, nursing and allied-health programs, and many academic services. UDC’s 2026 campus story also describes a wellness garden used by students and community members. Ask admissions which programs and student services are currently based there and whether a lab or clinical component meets elsewhere.

Van Ness Campus, at 4200 Connecticut Avenue NW, is the home of Mortuary Science within UDC-CC and a site for in-person continuing-education classes, including ESL. The larger university’s main campus is here, so a visit may connect a learner with general university resources as well as the specific course. Check the current class schedule for the exact room and meeting dates.

The Aviation Maintenance Hangar is at 2801 Thomas Avenue, Hangar 2, inside Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Washington, DC. UDC describes practical aircraft-maintenance instruction in the hangar, including a 48-credit mechanic certificate with approximately 1,900 hours of classroom and laboratory training. The college says the average student completes that certificate in four semesters, about two years, and must pass FAA written, oral and practical exams to earn the Airframe and Powerplant rating. The associate path is a separate option. Airport access and training schedules are specialized, so confirm directions and the correct entrance with the program director before going.

For a student comparing options, the useful sequence is to choose a credential, confirm its campus and current admission status, calculate tuition using the appropriate residency category, complete FAFSA or scholarship steps, and meet an advisor before registration. If English is a concern, ask about ESL 100 at Van Ness and the placement process at UDC-CC. The campus directory and current program pages can then turn a broad interest—health, information technology, aviation or public service—into a realistic plan for classes, travel and cost.

Bottom line
