Tennessee TSAA: need-based grant, FAFSA, and renewal priority

TSAA assists Tennessee residents with financial need enrolled at least half time; funding is limited and the annual FAFSA is central.

The Tennessee Student Assistance Award is state need-based grant aid for Tennessee residents attending eligible institutions. TSAC prioritizes applicants with the greatest need and funds are limited; meeting requirements does not mean everyone receives an award. Since 2025, TSAC has been part of the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC), while continuing to administer financial aid.

The program guide lists Tennessee residency, at least half-time enrollment, a participating institution, and a Student Aid Index of 5,000 or below for selection. FAFSA is required each year; the eligible college should be listed as the first choice for the system to process the award. Renewals receive priority and must file FAFSA by the published annual date, historically April 1.

TSAC’s table sets different annual caps by sector: up to $2,000 at public colleges and certain two-year schools, up to $4,000 at private four-year institutions, and separate limits for TCAT/career schools. The final amount is credited toward tuition and fees and may be reduced by course load, need, other aid, and available funds. Check the table for your institution type.

Complete FAFSA early and list the eligible institution you actually plan to attend first. Monitor the TSAC portal and campus email because verification may be required before certification. For 2026–27, confirm whether the published priority date still permits review; for future cycles, do not reuse April 1 without checking the current calendar.

Funds are allocated by need and available balance; a historical priority date is not a guarantee for new applicants in the current cycle. Read the program profile and the administering office; ask your campus financial-aid office to review your individual file.
