The Tennessee HOPE Scholarship uses state lottery proceeds for merit aid at eligible undergraduate colleges. It is not a need-based program or a one-size-fits-all award: residency, institution, academic standards, and course load all matter.
State guidance describes entry paths for Tennessee graduates, including at least a 3.0 high-school GPA or ACT composite 21/SAT combined 1060; separate rules apply to HiSET, GED, and nontraditional students. The FAFSA is the application for Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship programs. Check the rule for your cohort and graduation date because academic criteria and attempted-hour limits affect eligibility.
The latest state guidance reviewed lists up to $2,250 per term for full-time freshmen/sophomores at four-year schools and certain two-year colleges with campus housing; up to $2,850 for juniors/seniors at four-year schools and up to $1,600 at two-year colleges without housing. Rates change; check the award-year chart before budgeting.
File the FAFSA each year and make sure your eligible institution is reported correctly. Renewal GPA is checked at attempted-hour milestones: 2.75 at 24 and 48 hours, then 3.0 at 72 and each multiple of 24; state guidance describes partial-award and regain provisions. Review your record with TSAC or campus aid, especially after transfer credits or enrollment changes.
Before accepting an aid package, compare your individual notice with the bill and ask what happens if you change enrollment, major, or campus. Read the program profile and consult the administering agency; your institution’s financial-aid office confirms your individual determination.
