Maskay guide

Which Spain consulate serves Southern California, and what can you do in Los Angeles?

A guide to Spain’s Los Angeles Consulate: jurisdiction, appointments, passports, Civil Registry and where to submit each visa.

The Consulate General of Spain in Los Angeles serves a large area, but not all of California. Its official district covers Imperial, Inyo, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, as well as Arizona, Colorado and Utah. The rest of Northern California falls under the Consulate General in San Francisco. This division matters for Spanish citizens’ procedures and visa applications, which are generally tied to the applicant’s legal residence.

The office is at 5055 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 860. Public hours are listed as Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; appointment holders should arrive at their reserved time and check the current holiday calendar. The consulate says it receives a high volume of calls and recommends using its general email only for questions not already answered on the consular website. Specific procedures have departmental channels. The emergency number is reserved for serious situations affecting Spanish citizens, not administrative enquiries.

The catalogue includes Consular Register enrolment, passports, Civil Registry, nationality, certificates, legalisations, certified copies, notarial services and NIE applications, among other procedures. A passport applicant must be a Spanish citizen, be registered, appear in person, pay the fee and bring the documents listed for the case. The appointment is free and must be booked following the consulate’s instructions; the system may limit how far in advance it can be made and sets consequences for no-shows without cancellation. Requirements depend on the case: renewals, lost passports, first issues, minors and adults requiring support do not all follow the same checklist.

Visa applicants should verify the submission address before travelling. The official page says short-stay Schengen and study applications go to BLS Visa Service for Spain at 5455 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 1011, by appointment through its portal. Other categories are submitted in person at the consular office at 5055 Wilshire, also by appointment under the relevant procedure. BLS receives applications in categories assigned to it; it does not replace the consulate’s decision-making role and does not handle passports or Civil Registry matters.

The Ministry also lists honorary consulates in San Diego, Phoenix, Denver and Salt Lake City. They can facilitate some actions and guidance within defined functions, but do not process visas or powers of attorney; their capacity is not equivalent to that of a general consular office. Google Maps reviews for the Wilshire listing include favourable accounts of clear explanations and courteous treatment during specific procedures, alongside reports of difficulty obtaining appointments or replies. These are individual experiences, not a measure of every department. We compared those recurring themes with the consulate’s own notice recommending email as the preferred contact channel.
