Spain’s consular service in Washington is located inside the Embassy of Spain at 2375 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20037. It is a Consular Section, not one of Spain’s offices called a Consulate General; that distinction matters when looking up appointments, contacts and jurisdiction. Its published district covers Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina. Other states belong to separate general consulates, even if travelling to Washington seems more convenient.
The official website organizes services by department and directs most enquiries to dedicated email addresses. For a passport, applicants must be Spanish, registered with the Consular Register, bring the required documents and appear in person with an appointment requested at emb.washington.pas@maec.es. The page publishes a specific exception: people over 70 may visit without an appointment to apply for or renew a passport Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Collection of an issued passport is also available without an appointment during that window, with the receipt and the passport being replaced. This exception should not be extended to other services or younger applicants.
The Consular Section also handles registration and deregistration, Civil Registry, certificates, nationality, notarial acts, legalisations and assistance to Spanish citizens. Some registration applications are mailed, and the site specifies notarised documents for certain procedures. Applicants should read the page for their exact procedure: mailing papers does not mean every matter can be completed remotely, and some documents still require an appearance or appointment. The Ministry’s contact page lists the general email cog.washington@maec.es and an emergency number separate from the Embassy’s general phone.
Visa location depends on category. Current instructions send Schengen, study, non-lucrative, highly qualified worker and intra-company transfer applications to the BLS centre at 1660 L Street NW, Suite 216, Washington, DC 20036. Diplomatic and official visas are submitted directly to the Consular Section; other categories also go there after applicants email documents and request an appointment. BLS receives applications and provides application services, while consular decision-making remains with the office; do not attend 2375 Pennsylvania Avenue for a BLS appointment or vice versa.
Google Maps shows an Embassy of Spain listing rather than a separate profile for the Consular Section. Its reviews combine comments about different parts of the diplomatic mission, so we do not attribute every account to passports, visas or Civil Registry. Public themes include specific consular procedures that reviewers describe as completed as well as comments about access and communication. For planning, the official instructions take precedence: confirm your district, use the relevant email and go to the address assigned to your procedure.
The Spain Embassy Consular Section in Washington profile distinguishes embassy services, consular appointments and the BLS centre.
