In Ogimachi, thatched houses are not scenery sets: behind many doors, daily life continues. UNESCO inscribed Shirakawa-go and Gokayama in 1995 for the way their villages adapted to a mountain environment and for the social and economic systems that sustained them. That context changes how to explore the area. Instead of collecting photos, notice how houses, fields and paths fit together.
Start at Wada House, about a three-minute walk from the bus terminal. Its two public floors reveal the gassho-zukuri structure from inside and the history of a family with local responsibilities and a role in silk trading. Then cross the Shō River to Minkaen: its homes and rural buildings turn architecture into a comparative walk, with time to enter selected houses, look at tools and pause along the paths.
Allow an hour or more for each site, in addition to the village walk. Minkaen opens 8:40–17:00 from March to November and 9:00–16:00 in winter; last entry is 20 minutes before closing. The current fee is ¥800 adults and ¥400 children, although its English page still shows the old price. Wada House usually opens 9:00–17:00, with irregular closing days and cash payment. Check both sites on the day, especially in winter when snow can affect access and services.
Bus travel is central to the plan: Shirakawa-go has no railway station. Buses run from Takayama and Kanazawa, but some services require reservations. The tourist association asks visitors who are not staying overnight to avoid walking through Ogimachi at night and to respect gardens, doorways and residents’ privacy. Stay on marked paths, do not enter private property and leave time for the return bus; a short visit can be rewarding without turning a living community into a stage.
