About Gasshozukuri Minkaen Open-Air Museum

Across the Shō River, Minkaen changes the scale of a Shirakawa-go visit. Rather than following only the inhabited lanes of Ogimachi, this open-air museum brings traditional homes and rural buildings together in a setting where visitors can pause, study the construction and compare how mountain life was organized. The steep roofs make more sense here as practical responses to heavy snow and local conditions, not simply as a picturesque silhouette.

The grounds reward a slower pace: enter selected buildings, follow garden paths and look at timber details, tools and domestic spaces. The museum preserves buildings designated as important cultural properties of Gifu Prefecture. Allow an hour or a little more to read the displays and pause between houses instead of treating the visit as a quick photo stop. Public visitor comments often appreciate access to interiors and the calmer atmosphere compared with the main village street.

The entrance is at 2499 Ogimachi, beside the river and a short walk from the tourist centre. The current individual fee published on the Japanese site, effective 1 October 2025, is ¥800 for adults and ¥400 for children; the English page still displays the former rate, so check the updated Japanese guidance. Hours are 8:40–17:00 from March to November and 9:00–16:00 in winter, with last entry 20 minutes before closing; the museum closes on Thursdays from December to March. Heavy snow or strong wind can trigger a temporary closure, so check alerts before going.
