For a student comparing public two-year colleges in Seattle, the first decision is often practical: which campus teaches the program, what will tuition cost for this residency status, and where can an adult with limited English begin? Seattle Colleges is a district, not one building. It operates Seattle Central, North Seattle and South Seattle colleges, five specialty training centers and a partner shipyard classroom. This guide connects admissions, costs, aid, English study and location so a prospective student can plan the route before applying.
One district, several kinds of campus
The three colleges share a district application and student-service network, but their neighborhoods and teaching sites differ. Seattle Central is on Broadway in Capitol Hill, beside light rail and bus corridors. North Seattle is in the Northgate–Licton Springs area, with a pedestrian bridge to the light-rail station, wetlands, a child-care center and a wellness facility. South Seattle sits on a West Seattle hilltop with an arboretum and a visitor lot. The specialty sites focus on health education, maritime training, wood technology and workforce learning. Use the Seattle Central profile, North Seattle profile and South Seattle profile for campus details; the official location directory is the source for the full list.
That geography matters. A Seattle Central nursing course may meet at the Health Education Center in Pacific Tower; a maritime or welding student may travel to Ballard or Harbor Island. Georgetown and NewHolly offer adult-learning routes away from the main South campus. Check the course schedule for the actual building before arranging a commute.
- Health Education Center at Pacific Tower focuses on health-care training and clinical learning.
- Seattle Maritime Academy in Ballard trains students in marine deck and engineering pathways.
- Wood Technology Center offers hands-on wood, construction and boatbuilding programs.
- Georgetown Campus combines workforce training with adult English learning.
- NewHolly Learning Center offers English and adult-learning routes in southeast Seattle.
- Harbor Island Training Center is the district’s shipyard welding partnership site.
Applying and choosing a program
General admission is open-door, and applicants use the district’s online ctcLink process. Admission to the college does not automatically secure a place in every selective program. Health-care, technical and cohort-based pathways can set separate prerequisites, placement steps, background checks, health documentation, deadlines or capacity limits. Start with the district’s application steps, then read the individual program page and speak with its department before paying for tests or supplies.
The district advertises more than 130 programs in eight broad fields, from business, arts and hospitality to health, STEM, education and skilled trades. Students seeking a bachelor’s transfer route can compare the Associate in Arts Direct Transfer Agreement: the published degree is 90 quarter credits, with residency and GPA requirements. Career certificates vary more widely; Seattle Colleges says many take one to seven quarters, while associate-level professional credentials may require around 90 credits. Those are planning ranges, not a fixed completion promise. Course sequence, prerequisites, part-time attendance and availability all affect the calendar.
Tuition, aid and scholarships
Tuition is charged by credit and residency category, and the posted rates are only part of a term bill. On the district’s current table, 15 lower-division credits at the resident rate total $1,645.05 for a quarter. A waiver-eligible nonresident or eLearning example is $1,839.90; the international example is $3,760.85. Mandatory and variable charges can add technology, lab, transportation and student fees. Programs with special equipment or clinical requirements may have other costs. Use the current tuition and fee table and ask how your residency and course load are classified before budgeting.
Students may apply for federal aid through FAFSA or Washington aid through WASFA, depending on eligibility. Seattle Colleges lists Pell and other federal grants, Washington College Grant, College Bound, work study, loans and institutional awards; its funding guide explains the application routes. The Opportunity Grant is aimed at eligible Washington residents in approved programs; published coverage can reach tuition and fees for a limited number of credits and may include support for books or tools. Scholarships have their own criteria and deadlines. The Seattle Colleges Foundation’s 2026–27 application is currently closed, so check its scholarship page for the next cycle rather than assuming an award is open.
Starting with English
Seattle Colleges has more than one English pathway. Basic and Transitional Studies offers noncredit adult ESL at North, Central and South, with levels that differ by site; its published fee is $25 per quarter and may change. At South, Georgetown and NewHolly, the six-level Transitional Studies sequence is designed to build language and adult-education skills for college classes or work. Placement and registration are required, and immigration-status eligibility differs by center.
International students should distinguish that option from the Seattle Colleges Institute of English. The Institute’s English and College Bridge programs are for international students. College Bridge can include transferable college credits; students who meet the published completion level may enter full-time study without a TOEFL or IELTS score. Each level generally follows a quarter-length schedule, but term length and weekly hours vary by season. Ask the Institute which visa and enrollment rules apply; do not assume adult ESL is an international-student program.
How to plan the first visit
Before leaving, identify the program, campus and office—not just the college name. Bring the application or ctcLink number, transcripts if available, residency documents for tuition questions and any financial-aid correspondence. Confirm class location, appointment hours, parking rules and transit connections on the official campus page. Seattle Central has limited parking and a nearby light-rail station; North requires a campus parking permit and connects to Northgate Transit Center; South publishes a short-term visitor lot. Rates and route schedules can change.
Seattle Colleges grew from separate technical and community-college institutions: Seattle Central traces its roots to Edison Technical Institute, and the district’s three colleges were established by 1970. Today the system serves the Seattle region through transfer education, career preparation and adult learning. The strongest starting point is the one that matches the student’s next step—language placement, an aid appointment, a transfer plan or a hands-on program—followed by a confirmed address and a realistic term budget.
