What to Visit in Umekoji with Children: Kyoto Aquarium or the Railway Museum?

Two family visits inside Umekoji Park: compare the aquarium’s animals and schedules with historic trains and railway activities.

Umekoji Park brings together two family attractions that can fill a morning or a full day, although they move at different paces. Kyoto Aquarium travels through freshwater and marine habitats, with giant salamanders, jellyfish, penguins and seals. The Railway Museum displays locomotives, carriages and railway operations, adding experiences such as a short ride behind a steam engine. To choose, consider whether the children would rather watch animals and feeding programmes or explore machinery and simulators. The aquarium opens year-round but has no single daily schedule: hours vary by date, and admission closes one hour before the published closing time. Since February 2026, tickets cost ¥2,600 for adults, ¥2,000 for high school students, ¥1,400 for elementary and junior high students, and ¥900 for children aged three and above. The Railway Museum is normally open 10:00 am–5:00 pm, last entry 4:30 pm; it generally closes on Wednesdays and from 30 December to 1 January, with holiday exceptions. Admission starts at ¥200 for children and is ¥1,500 for adults. At the museum, exploring the trains can take several hours; the simulator requires an advance ticket and SL Steam costs extra. At the aquarium, presentation and feeding times help structure the circuit and avoid missing an activity. Public reviews for both venues highlight their family appeal and the convenience of having them in one park; they also mention crowds, waits around popular displays and limited slots for some experiences. Checking schedules and buying ahead where required makes the day more predictable. Both venues are inside the park, but from Kyoto Station it takes about fifteen minutes to walk to the aquarium and roughly twenty to the museum. Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station is especially close to the museum and about seven minutes from the aquarium. A car is unnecessary: the aquarium has no dedicated visitor parking. If visiting both, allow at least a long half-day and leave time for a meal in the park. If choosing one, the aquarium offers a more compact route through habitats, while the Railway Museum rewards a longer, exploratory visit.

Bottom line

Choose the aquarium for habitats and animals; allow more time at the Railway Museum if the children want to explore trains or try the simulator. Check calendars and programmes before setting out.
