Kamikochi is not a place where you can drive to the viewpoint: private vehicles are barred from the access road, and most visitors arrive by bus or taxi from Matsumoto, Sawando or Hirayu. For a scenic walk without a major climb, one of the best combinations is to get off at Taisho-ike bus stop and walk to Kappa Bridge. The route links the landscape created by Mount Yakedake’s 1915 eruption with the valley’s best-known bridge and finishes near the bus terminal.
The walk between Kappa Bridge and Taisho Pond is 3.8 to 4 kilometres, depending on which bank you choose; the official site estimates 75 or 80 minutes one way, excluding breaks. Walking from Taisho Pond towards Kappa Bridge, a bus can drop you at the pond stop; the path passes marshland, Tashiro Pond, Tashiro and Hotaka bridges and the Walter Weston Monument. The terrain is relatively level and signposted, but treat the estimate as a guide rather than a stopwatch: birdwatching, photos and rests add time.
Transport logistics need as much attention as the walk. In 2026, the Matsumoto–Kamikochi bus season runs from 17 April to 15 November, with no buses from 16 November to 16 April. The direct National Park Liner leaves Matsumoto Bus Terminal at 5:30 am and 10:15 am and usually sells out, so Alpico recommends advance booking. If you take the train to Shin-Shimashima and then a bus, reserve the bus leg; the local train costs ¥710 and is paid in cash at the station, with no IC card or credit card accepted. All return buses to Matsumoto require a reserved seat; same-day tickets at the terminal are only available if seats remain.
Weather changes quickly at this altitude: even summer can feel cold, and rain makes some sections slippery. Carry a waterproof layer, water and shoes with good grip; follow conservation signs, do not feed monkeys and stay on the trail. At the end, continue towards Kappa Bridge and the terminal, but check in advance which bus returns to Matsumoto and how long it takes to reach it from your starting stop. If you do not have a confirmed seat or the timetable is tight, shorten the walk and return to the terminal with time to spare.

Taisho Pond is a landscape shaped by an event that can still be read in its details. In 1915, an eruption of nearby Mount Yakedake dammed the Azusa River and formed the pond; its name comes from the Taisho era.
