Jersey City taco guide: a family tortería, handmade tortillas and a late-night kitchen

Torta Truck in The Heights, Mi Mariachi on Jordan Avenue and La Brujería on Summit offer three different ways to build a Mexican meal.

In Jersey City, the taco can lead to a family’s food-cart history, an Oaxacan corn preparation or dinner well after other kitchens close. Those differences are useful when time is short: the best starting point is the dish and neighborhood that fit the outing, rather than another long list of restaurant names.

This route runs through The Heights, McGinley Square and Summit Avenue. Torta Truck gives tortas and trompo meat equal billing; Mi Mariachi’s Jordan Avenue kitchen offers handmade tortillas and a wider range of antojitos; La Brujería keeps regional fillings available overnight. Each profile gathers the food details, phone and ordering route in one place.

Torta Truck: follow the family cart into The Heights

At 413 Central Avenue, the history begins with Carmen and Jesus selling breakfast tortas and atole in Union City in 2010. Their daughter Victoria developed the truck and festival business before the family added a Jersey City storefront.

Pastor is trompo-roasted pork, asada is beer-marinated steak, and birria is braised beef. Nopal offers a grilled-cactus taco. The torta format adds another reason to stop: bolillo, quesillo, beans, avocado and pickled jalapeño make pastor into a fuller sandwich. A potato-and-poblano molote or birria empanada can turn two tacos into a varied lunch.

Mi Mariachi: begin by choosing the tortilla

The restaurant at 6 Jordan Avenue has an explicitly priced handmade-tortilla option. Four tacos can compare familiar pastor or carnitas with suadero, cecina or goat barbacoa. Its current delivery menu highlights pastor among frequent orders.

Sopes, picaditas and bean-filled huaraches give the corn several shapes, while chicken mole and Oaxacan enchiladas support a longer meal. Recent customer accounts also favor soups such as caldo de res. This guide uses the McGinley Square restaurant’s own contact and menu, so an order goes to Jordan Avenue.

La Brujería: a different kind of late-night choice

At 200 Summit Avenue, the taco order allows a soft corn, flour or crunchy shell, then onion and cilantro or lettuce, tomato and cheese. Cochinita pibil, lengua, pork-belly chicharrón and potato with jalapeño make that decision more interesting than a standard chicken-or-beef split.

Quesabirria uses lamb and beef with Oaxaca cheese and consommé. The kitchen moved here in 2024 and now has indoor seating. Overnight service includes a separate early-morning menu, so the available checkout slot matters around the 5:30–6:30 transition. The rest of the meal can stay Mexican even when the hour is unusually late.

Bottom line

For this route, choose the neighborhood first, then the preparation: trompo and bolillo, handmade masa, or lamb-and-beef birria after hours.
