What does Japan’s Curitiba Consulate handle in southern Brazil?

Jurisdiction over Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, with guidance on passports, civil records, visas and itinerant service.

Curitiba is Japan’s office for residents of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. The first practical question is whether the address falls within that jurisdiction: Brazil distributes consular work among several missions, and procedures can depend on both region and case.

The Consulate is at Alameda Dr. Carlos de Carvalho 431, fourth floor of Edifício Tiemann Headquarters, postal code 80410-180. Its May 2026 directory names Consul-General Toshinori Matsushiro and lists +55 (41) 3322-4919. General public hours run in two weekday sessions; visa service has its own window, 9:00–11:00 a.m. for applications and 1:30–4:30 p.m. for collection.

The website does not treat every matter as one counter. Its overview links to separate guidance for passports, visas, certificates, civil registration, nationality, fees and entry to Japan. Passport filing is available online through Japan’s overseas-resident system or in person. The page estimates about a month for issuance and requires the holder to collect the passport in person; mail applications are not accepted. That can mean two trips even when the initial paperwork was submitted online.

Visa categories include tourism, visits, business, transit and certain family or work situations. The Consulate says Brazilian electronic-passport holders may travel without a visa for short stays under current conditions. In some cases, an authorised representative may submit documents, but the applicant can still be called for an interview. This should not be read as a blanket right to delegate every application.

For residents outside Curitiba, the Consulate’s itinerant service may bring selected procedures closer to other cities. Each notice gives a date, venue and service menu; these events are not permanent branches and may offer a limited set of transactions. Read the current notice and confirm the appointment and accepted documents before travelling.

The site also groups information on certificates, births, marriage, nationality, MEXT scholarships and fees. A useful sequence is to check residence and purpose, open the specific procedure page, gather its listed evidence and verify that department’s counter hours. We consulted official material dated 2026; later changes should be checked on the news page and with the office.
