Maskay guide

What can you do at Japan’s Belém Consulate, and which states does it serve?

A guide to Japan’s Belém Consulate: four states, passports, visas, certificates, hours and contact channels.

Belém is Japan’s post for four northern states: Pará, Amapá, Maranhão and Piauí. It operates as a Consulate and consular office; its institutional rank should not be confused with that of a Consulate-General. Jurisdiction determines where to apply for passports, certificates and visas, and which office receives local scholarship applications.

The address is Avenida Magalhães Barata 651, Edifício Belém Office Center, seventh floor, São Brás, Belém-PA, postal code 66060-281. A notice updated on 24 August 2026 lists +55 (91) 3249-3344 and +55 (91) 99981-2841 because the telephone carrier was affecting calls to the landline. Consular matters: belem.consul@bm.mofa.go.jp; culture and scholarships: belemcultura@bm.mofa.go.jp.

General hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m.–noon and 1:30–5:00 p.m., except holidays. The same notice asks visitors applying for visas, passports or certificates to arrive at least 30 minutes before the end of the relevant window. This is a specific request to allow the counter to receive those applications before closing.

Passport applications require supporting documents, and the page updated in July 2026 says the holder must collect the passport in person. Visa guidance lists transit, tourism, visits, business and specific categories, with forms and documents by purpose. Applications may be filed in person, through an authorized representative or through a registered travel agency; postal applications are not accepted. Five working days is an estimate for a complete file without questions, not a guarantee.

Other listed services include civil-status records and certificates—birth, marriage, divorce, death and single status—as well as residence certificates and signature recognition. The office posts document lists, cash-payment instructions and fee validity dates, which vary by procedure. The MEXT scholarship page says applicants applying through Belém must reside in one of the four states in its jurisdiction.

Official 2026 notices identify chief consul Tomio Sakamoto. A recent consular notice also warns that telephone-provider problems were affecting calls to the landline; if unable to get through, use the published mobile number or subject-specific email. We could not establish an unequivocal Maps listing with verifiable rating and review count, so no user opinions are attributed. Before visiting, confirm the exact checklist, service window and whether personal collection is required.
