Iowa Tuition Grant: aid for residents at participating private colleges

The 2027–28 FAFSA deadline is July 1, 2027; the new-cycle maximum has not yet been set.

The Iowa Tuition Grant helps Iowa residents enrolled at participating private nonprofit colleges and universities in the state. It supports undergraduate associate or bachelor’s study; it is not a general program for every private school or for graduate study.

Published 2027–28 eligibility requires Iowa residency, undergraduate enrollment at an eligible institution, an on-time FAFSA, and a calculated Student Aid Index within the range set by the state. The webpage says the new-year SAI range has not yet been determined. Part-time students may qualify for adjusted awards.

The 2027–28 maximum has not yet been set. As a clearly separate historical reference, the 2026–27 maximum at participating private nonprofit schools was $7,500; the actual award may be lower depending on available funds and projected recipients. Students may receive up to four years of full-time undergraduate grants; the institution credits the grant to tuition.

For 2027–28, FAFSA opened October 1, 2026, and the published deadline is July 1, 2027. File FAFSA, confirm your college is on the eligible list, and review your SAI in the FAFSA Submission Summary. Ask Iowa College Aid or the campus how course load, residency, and other aid affect the final calculation.

The agency or institution determines final eligibility and the award under current-cycle rules and available funding. Read the program profile and the administering agency; ask the college for an individual review.

Do not treat the prior year’s $7,500 ceiling as a 2027–28 promise: Iowa College Aid has not yet set the new maximum or SAI range. For planning, submit FAFSA early, verify the private college’s participation, and ask whether the campus needs additional documents beyond FAFSA. If you attend part time, request an estimate for your actual credit load; the adjusted award may differ from a full-time figure.
