Where to eat tacos in Iowa City: three kitchens, from the market to downtown

La Regia's unusual cuts, Estela's made-to-order tortillas and Luna's family stews offer three distinct ways to eat Mexican in Iowa City.

A taco lunch in Iowa City can take several directions before anyone reaches for salsa. It might begin with beef cheek on two corn tortillas, become a made-to-order combination on a house flour shell, or lead to a family kitchen whose menu now includes the stews once confined to a market stand. These three businesses are worth considering for their different cooking and service formats. They are a selection, rather than a claim that one restaurant wins every kind of meal.

La Regia: choose the cut, not just the meat

At La Regia on Highway 1 West, the interesting decision is how the filling has been prepared. Steak from the flat top, tender beef cheek, tongue and crisp-fried tripe offer a wider range than a generic beef-or-chicken menu. The basic street taco keeps onion and cilantro over two corn tortillas, making a mixed order a practical way to compare cuts.

Birria is available in beef and goat versions, with quesabirria and broth providing a different format. Potato tacos and a bean-and-avocado vegetable taco give non-meat eaters actual dishes to choose from. An adjoining market adds another reason to stop, but it has a separate contact from the restaurant; both are explained in the profile.

Estela's: lunch built around your choices

Downtown, Estela's Fresh Mex puts the customer in charge of the combination. The three-taco order allows homemade flour, soft corn or crisp corn tortillas, followed by fillings, salsa and vegetables. Its roots reach back to Elsa de la Paz's catering work in 2001; the restaurant name honours her mother, Estela.

Breakfast burritos create a second reason to know the address. Chorizo and jalapeño give the Spicy its direction, while the Buff incorporates pancake and maple syrup. The twelve-taco Hawk Box suits a group better than assembling individual lunches. Iowa City closes Monday; the nearby Coralville branch has its own address, phone and schedule.

Luna's: the market story continues indoors

Luna's began at the farmers market in 2019 and opened its Washington Street restaurant in January 2026. That history matters to the plate: tacos remain, but chicken albondigas in chipotle, pork in salsa verde and cheese- or tofu-filled poblanos broaden the meal. A bowl, a plate and a family combination offer different ways through the kitchen's guisos.

The permanent restaurant now publishes weekday hours and reserves Saturday for private events. Its late-night Ped Mall cart is a separate operation; an old opening announcement should not send someone to a closed dining room. The linked profiles gather those practical distinctions, the food and the ordering details in one place.

Bottom line

Choose La Regia for a varied taco order, Estela’s for a custom combination or Luna’s for tacos alongside family stews.
