The Monetary Award Program (MAP) is Illinois state grant aid that can reduce tuition and mandatory fees for undergraduates with financial need. For 2027–28, the FAFSA and Alternative Application are available, but MAP has no universal application deadline for every student: the state gives priority to certain returning recipients and can suspend awards if funds run low. That distinction matters: submitting a FAFSA is not the same as receiving a final award.
MAP requires Illinois residency, financial need, enrollment at an approved school and satisfactory academic progress; the general minimum is three credits per term, and students must not already have a bachelor’s degree. There is also a limit of 135 MAP-paid credit hours. For 2027–28, students who received MAP in 2026–27 must submit the FAFSA by February 1, 2027 for priority access to funds. ISAC says this date is not a universal deadline: a later applicant may still receive aid if funding remains. For 2026–27, awards for initial FAFSA records received after April 23, 2026 were suspended; rules are year-specific.
There is no separate MAP form. File the FAFSA and list at least one approved Illinois school; the institution transmits information and the system calculates an estimated amount. Check the current 2027–28 school list before choosing a campus because eligibility is limited to approved schools and locations. ISAC has an Alternative Application for students unable to use FAFSA, but its 2027–28 criteria changed and must be checked in the official prescreening process. Do not use older articles to infer a legal or immigration status; ask ISAC and the college directly.
ISAC Student Engagement and Support Services can explain portals, stages and resources, but the institution’s financial-aid office certifies enrollment, credits and posting to the account. If an award says “estimated,” ask the college whether it still needs eligibility certification, credit-hour calculation, disbursement authorization or simply accounting reconciliation. The published 2026–27 maximum is $8,064 and applies only to tuition and mandatory fees; do not treat it as your individual award or carry the cap into another year before ISAC publishes the final formula.
In a public fall 2026 thread, students said MAP remained “estimated” in their accounts while the college waited to process or receive funds. These are individual experiences, not confirmation of a general delay. To resolve a case, save the FAFSA date and offer, ask in writing who must take the next step and when to check again. If enrollment changes or a class is dropped, tell the college because the award calculation and paid hours can change. ISAC offers English- and Spanish-language support at (800) 899-4722, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Central.
