About Monetary Award Program (MAP) — Illinois Student Assistance Commission
The Monetary Award Program (MAP) is Illinois need-based state grant aid for undergraduates. It is applied to tuition and mandatory fees, not housing, meals, books or transportation. The published maximum for 2026–27 is $8,064, but the amount depends on ISAC’s calculation, eligible charges and available funding; it is not an automatic award or a guarantee for every applicant.
Basic eligibility includes Illinois residency, financial need, U.S. citizenship or eligible noncitizen status, undergraduate study with no prior bachelor’s degree, at least three credits per term at an approved school, satisfactory academic progress, and no student-loan default or grant refund owed. MAP also has a cumulative limit of 135 paid credit hours. For a dependent student, ISAC looks at the residency of the parent whose information is on the FAFSA.
There is no separate MAP application: submit the 2027–28 FAFSA as soon as possible and list at least one approved Illinois college so ISAC can calculate eligibility. For students who received MAP in 2026–27 and remain eligible, the published priority date for 2027–28 funds is February 1, 2027. ISAC says this is a priority date, not a universal deadline; students who miss it may still receive a grant if funding remains. Appropriations can run out and ISAC may suspend new awards, so file when the cycle opens.
Then compare two different screens: the FAFSA Submission Summary, where federal data can be corrected, and the college aid package, which may show MAP as estimated until the school certifies eligibility. The institution checks enrollment, eligible program, credits and progress; do not submit an appeal or form that no one requested. If the amount is missing, ask financial aid in writing whether the ISAC file arrived, whether the college is approved for 2027–28, and whether credit-hour or eligibility certification remains. Check ISAC’s current school list.
In September and October 2026, some students posted that their college accounts showed MAP as “estimated” while they waited for funds to be transmitted or applied. These are personal accounts; they do not establish a general delay or replace an answer from ISAC. The practical rule is not to treat an estimated award as money already credited: agree with the college on how to handle the bill and when to check again, and keep the FAFSA date, notices and case number. ISAC offers English- and Spanish-speaking student support at (800) 899-4722, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Central.
